Coral Thede is a comedian, writer, and here to make your day. While most of us were scrolling TikTok, she created a record-breaking, self-produced comedy show called Tits Up at Teehee’s that has sold out every single month at Teehee’s Comedy Club.
In February, I attended her show with some friends visiting Des Moines from New York City. She lovingly dubbed my friend “Hot New York Yoga Austin”, serenaded him with a Blake Shelton song, and made our night unforgettable.
I met up with Coral at The Slow Down DSM Coffee Co. to ask her some questions and understand how she got into comedy. Here’s what was on her mind:
You call yourself an “inspirational entertainer,” but you’ve sold out ALL of your last five shows at Teehee’s Comedy Club – why the “inspirational”? Seems to me like you are a “successful entertainer.”
I appreciate the hype and humbly accept the praise. It’s been such a wild ride in such a short and weird time. The past few years have brought more heartache than I thought I could handle, more adventure than I could have ever imagined, and more intention for the life I truly want to live.
At the core of all that I do – whether it’s a humorous but honest Instagram story, a lengthy pouring-out of wise and heartfelt words, a song from my toilet, or a comedy show – I hope the people who cross my path feel lighter and less alone. I hope they laugh a little harder, love themselves a little deeper, and can see a bit more light through whatever darkness they’re going through. While I certainly aim to entertain, I truly desire to inspire.
Where did your interest in stand-up comedy come from?
My interest in standup came at a really difficult and divine time. In 2018, I lost my father. It was tragic and traumatic in ways I’m still grappling with. In 2019, I traveled the world. I went to India, Ireland, about 12 other countries, and lived the Year of Living Coral – literally. That fall, I attended my first Camp Climb – while crying around a bonfire of strangers on the surface (but sisters of the soul), I gave them my Netflix special. And I shared my deepest desire: to tell my story and make people laugh. Three months later, Teehee’s Comedy Club opened.

What is “Tits Up at Teehee’s”?
Tits Up at Teehee’s is my monthly sold-out and self-produced comedy show.
After my 30th birthday in New York City, my friend Lauren made me watch Marvelous Mrs. Maisel for the first time instead of Friends for the 200th time. I am notorious for re-watching old shows and always saying I’ll get around to new ones (which I don’t). Good call on her part. I loved the bright colors and unique characters and quick wit of the show. The thing that really stuck with me was “Tits Up.” It’s the mantra her manager recites to her before every show. I love that outlook of putting it all behind you or bringing it all on stage with you – either way, the show must go on.
My hope for this show is to be a reminder of the performers to live out their fullest potential. For new comedians to gain confidence, for seasoned comedians to remember why they started doing comedy in the first place, and for patrons to just have a good-ass time. And maybe leave feeling a little inspired to live their own version of “Tits Up” in their lives.
Why is Teehee’s the best?
Teehee’s Comedy Club opened its doors at the exact time I was ready to open mine. From the very first night I walked in, just as a girl looking for a White Claw, I was hooked. It’s where all my firsts happened. First open mic, first sign up at an open mic, first stand-up class, and first record-selling, sold-out show. It’s a safe space and a special place. The community that has come together this past year has been absolutely incredible.
There’s a reason it was voted the number one spot to see comedy in Des Moines – because as a brand new, independently and minority-owned business, it survived. It survived a global pandemic with nothing but local acts, enthusiastic creativity, consistent loyalty, and a shit-ton of Loopy Mules. I’m really proud to be a part of a more progressive, inclusive, and diverse comedy scene. And we’re just getting started.
What is the most exciting thing on your horizon right now?
Besides Archie’s grooming appointment and finally buying curtains for the house I’ve lived in for over a year, I’d say becoming the business owner of my own brand. Oh, and writing that book.

Where’s your go-to for coffee?
The Slow Down. I also love me some Horizon Line and Dreiberge Coffee.
What’s your go-to for a cocktail?
Hello Marjorie if I’m feeling fancy, Bellhop if I’m feeling fruity, 85 bar if I’m feeling sporty, and any dive bar in town any time else. Also Hessen Haus always.
Where’s your happy place in Des Moines?
KIN. Porch Light. The Walnut. And Teehee’s, of course.
What’s the best thing someone could do to support you as COVID goes away?
Just be there. I’ve always been a “go big or go home” person, but even I’ve played my life small in many ways. I’m trying not to do that anymore.
When you see someone going for it, support them. Or get the fuck out of their way. If someone’s making music, spin their records. If they’re painting art, get a piece commissioned. If they’re doing a comedy show, buy a ticket. Artists and creatives lost more than jobs this past year. We lost venues and stages and audiences. Pay creatives for what they are creating. And if you ever see a light in someone, tell them. That will help them keep it on.
